Before you start

Welcome! In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of installing your Kadence child theme in WordPress. Even if you’re new to WordPress, these steps are easy to follow. Let’s begin.

Before you can install and customize your Kadence child theme, there are a few things you’ll need to set up. Don’t worry — I’ll explain everything step by step so it’s easy to understand.

1. Purchase Your Domain Name

A domain name is the web address people will use to visit your website. For example, “www.yoursite.com” is a domain name. Think of it as your website’s home address on the internet.

  • How to Get a Domain Name: You can purchase a domain name from any number of registrars. I use Porkbun because they have great support and I love their branding. Namecheap is another good option, or you can purchase your domain name through your hosting company. You’ll pay an annual fee for your domain, the cost of which can vary widely, depending on a number of factors.

When choosing a domain name, try to pick something simple, easy to remember, and relevant to your site or business.

2. Web Hosting

Once you have a domain name, you’ll need web hosting. Web hosting is where your website’s files (images, content, etc.) are stored so that people can access your site online. Think of web hosting as the “land” where your website is built, while the domain name is the “address” where people can find it.

  • How to Get Web Hosting: You can sign up for web hosting through companies like Cloudways, Krystal or Kinsta. These hosting providers offer plans specifically designed for WordPress websites, which makes setup much easier.

When choosing a host, look for one that offers WordPress compatibility, good customer support, and reliable performance.

3. Install WordPress

With your domain and web hosting in place, the next step is to install WordPress. WordPress is the platform you’ll use to build and manage your website.

  • Many hosting companies offer 1-click WordPress installation, so you can easily install WordPress from your hosting dashboard. If you’re unsure how to do this, your hosting provider will have support or tutorials available to help.

Once you have all these pieces in place (a domain name, web hosting, and WordPress installed), you’re ready to install your Kadence child theme.
