How to Add Your Own Content to Your Kadence Child Theme

How to Add Copy and Images to Your Kadence Child Theme

Now that you’ve installed your Kadence child theme, it’s time to fill your website with content. In this guide, we’ll show you how to add text (also called “copy”) and images to your pages. Don’t worry, even if you’re new to WordPress, we’ll walk you through everything in easy-to-follow steps!

Step 1: Log in to Your WordPress Dashboard

  • Access Your Dashboard: In your browser, go to your website’s address followed by /wp-admin (for example, www.yoursite.com/wp-admin).
  • Log In: Enter your username and password to get to the WordPress dashboard, where you can manage everything about your website.

Step 2: Create a New Page or Post

Now that you’re logged in, you can start adding content by creating a new page or post.

For Pages (like your Home or About page):

  • In the left-hand menu, go to Pages > Add New.

For Blog Posts:

  • Go to Posts > Add New.

This will take you to the WordPress editor, where you can start adding your text and images.

Step 3: Gutenberg Blocks vs. Kadence Blocks

WordPress uses a system of blocks to let you add content like text, images, and more to your site. There are two types of blocks you’ll encounter:

  • Gutenberg Blocks (black icons): These are the original WordPress blocks that allow you to add basic elements like text, headings, images, and lists.
  • Kadence Blocks (blue icons): Kadence blocks offer more advanced features and customization options than Gutenberg blocks. You’ll be able to do things like add columns, create buttons, and control spacing with much more flexibility. It’s best to use Kadence blocks whenever possible because they provide more control over your design and make it easier to customize your website.

Step 4: Add Text (Copy)

Adding text to your new Kadence child theme is easy using the WordPress editor.

  • Add a Block for Text: The WordPress editor works with blocks. When you create a new page or post, you’ll see a plus (+) button where you can add different types of content. Click the plus (+) button and select the Paragraph block to add text.
  • Tip: If you see a black icon next to “Paragraph,” it’s a Gutenberg block. If it’s blue, it’s a Kadence block. For basic text, the Gutenberg paragraph block works fine, but Kadence blocks can give you more options for layout and styling.
  • Type Your Text: Once the Paragraph block is added, you can simply click inside it and start typing your content. This can be anything from an introduction to an article or a welcome message on your home page.
  • Formatting Your Text: You’ll see formatting options above the text block. You can make text bold, italic, or add links by highlighting the text and selecting the appropriate button.
  • Adding Headings: To make sections of your content stand out, you can add Headings (e.g., titles or section names). Click the plus (+) button again and select the Heading block. Then type your heading and choose the size (e.g., H1 for a main title, H2 for a subsection).
  • Tip: Kadence’s Advanced Heading block (blue icon) offers more customization options than the default Gutenberg Heading block (black icon). You can choose different fonts, colors, and spacing for your headings.

Step 5: Add Images

Adding images to your Kadence child theme helps make your website look more engaging and professional. Here’s how to do it:

  • Add an Image Block: Just like with text, click the plus (+) button and select the Image block from the options.
  • Tip: Use the Kadence Image block (blue icon) for more control over how your image is displayed. It allows you to easily adjust margins, add hover effects, and make your images responsive.
  • Upload or Select an Image:
  • Upload: Click the Upload button to choose an image file from your computer.
  • Media Library: If you’ve already uploaded the image to your website, click Media Library and select it from there.
  • Insert from URL: You can also add images from other websites by entering the image’s URL.
  • Add a Caption (Optional): Once your image is inserted, you can add a caption by clicking underneath the image and typing in your description.
  • Resize or Align Your Image: Use the options above the image block to resize it or adjust its alignment (left, center, or right). You can also add a link to the image by clicking the link icon.

Step 6: Add Multiple Images with a Gallery

Want to showcase several images at once? You can add a Gallery block:

  • Add a Gallery Block: Click the plus (+) button and select the Gallery block.
  • Select Your Images: Either upload new images or select multiple images from your Media Library. These images will display in a grid format.
  • Arrange Your Gallery: Once you’ve added your images, you can drag and drop them to arrange the order. You can also adjust the number of columns in your gallery using the settings on the right side of the editor.

Step 7: Save and Publish Your Content

After adding your text and images, you’ll want to save your work:

  • Save Draft: If you’re not ready to publish yet, click Save Draft to save your progress.
  • Preview Your Page: Want to see how it looks? Click the Preview button at the top of the screen to see a live preview of your page with your text and images.
  • Publish: Once you’re happy with your content, click Publish to make it live on your website!

Step 8: Customize Your Page Layout with Kadence Blocks

Kadence blocks offer more advanced features for building your website. You can use Kadence blocks to create columns, add buttons, and much more. These blocks are specially designed to give you more flexibility and control over your design compared to the basic Gutenberg blocks.

Kadence Block Examples:
  • Columns Block: Want to put text and images side by side? Use the Kadence Row Layout block (blue icon) to create multiple columns on your page.
  • Advanced Heading Block: Customize your headings further by using Kadence’s Advanced Heading block for more styling options than the default Gutenberg heading.
  • Explore Other Kadence Blocks: Kadence offers blocks for testimonials, tabs, icons, and even advanced forms. Take some time to explore these blocks in the editor to see what works best for your site.

Wrapping Up

And that’s it! You’ve now learned how to add text and images to your Kadence child theme and the difference between Gutenberg blocks and Kadence blocks. Whenever possible, use Kadence blocks for more advanced features and better control over your website’s design.

Feel free to experiment with different blocks and layouts to make your site look exactly the way you want.
